The Boat and Equipment

Captain Steve guides on his new 2023 Dek Kat 2700 built here locally in Cross City Fl. This 27 foot flats boat has comfortable seating for six guests and has room enough for all to fish. The large forward fishing deck can accomodate three to four anglers. With a nine foot beam it is exceptionally stable so there is no need to worry about having your sea legs. Despite being a large 27 foot boat she is a shallow water fishing machine with a draft of less than 10 inches. This boat can get to the waters where the fish are hiding. The helm is on a tower allowing the captain to spot fish and guide you to them to maximize your fishing success.

It is equipped with a 65 quart cooler that will handle all your food and drinks and has plenty of storage room for all of your gear. The new Suzuki 300 hp motor makes cruising at 35 to 40 mph fuel efficient and making it possible to reach different locations quickly and with a great smooth and dry ride.

The equipment Captain Steve uses is all quality gear. Falcon fishing rods and Daiwa Procyon reels coupled with a quality braided line will make catching the fish much easier. Fishing in Steinhatchee is dominated by the use of artifical lures. Captain Steve has a full arsenal of fish catching lures ready for use including Mirrorlure, Yozuri, Live Target, and Heddon. He also carries a wide variety of solf plastic lures which are equally effective in the right conditions. Rest assured, you will never be short of lures to use. On those occassions where live bait is most effective there is a large live well to keep them alive and fresh all day. There is also additional storage for caught fish destined for the fillet table so no need to add them to the drink cooler.

For an in depth review of the boat the following video is a review conducted by Captain Blair Wiggins from the Blair Wiggins Outdoors TV show as seen on the Discovery Channel and Waypoint TV. You can also check him out YouTube.

Fished two full days with Captain Stephen during the week of March 13. Stephen did a great job for us, starting by being at the dock on time, with a well-equipped clean boat, good quality rods and reels, and a lot of lively bait. I rated the overall experience as good only because of weather conditions which are of course, out of the captains’ hands. In spite of a cold front and high winds, we still landed shark, snook, trout, and of course the always present catfish. If I ever get to fish in the Sanibel area again, I will gladly spend my money with Silver Fish Inshore Charters.

Captain Steve was easy going and very knowledgeable. We were on fish right away. We used soft baits for the trout and he netted live “white” bait for the reds. Although still a little early in the season for reds … the live bait drew the wary reds out of the mangroves. The captain fished hard and even added a little more time to put a few more in the boat. Having owned and fished from a boat in New England for + 30 years this was everything I hoped for.

Had a great trip! Water was cold (61 degrees at start) so fish were a bit elusive, but not from lack of trying. Captain Washington was a top notch guide and worked his butt off to get us into fish. We were fishing for speckled trout in the grass flats off Sanibel and Captiva. Boat and tackle were top end. Great day on the water!
